Vehicle Entry Permit

Starting 1st October 2024, Malaysia will require all foreign-registered vehicles entering from Singapore to obtain a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP). Failure to comply may result in fines up to RM2,000 (about US$425) or six months of imprisonment. All foreign vehicle owners, including private and commercial vehicles as well as motorcycles, must register for a VEP.

Application Process

- Owners or representatives must register online at the Road Traffic Department’s website.

- After registering, users will receive confirmation and must complete the process on the VEP portal.

- A Touch N’ Go eWallet account is needed for the process, and required documents include motor insurance, NRIC, and certificate of entitlement.

Once approved, applicants will choose how to collect their RFID tag—either by courier or in person. The tag costs RM10, and payment can be made online.

Tag Attachment

The RFID tag should be placed on the top left corner of the windscreen or the left headlamp, ensuring it’s not obstructed. A photo of the tag must be uploaded on the VEP portal.

Functionality

The RFID tag allows users to pay road charges and tolls via designated lanes. It links to the user’s Touch N’ Go eWallet and is valid for five years.

Transferability

The VEP is not transferable between vehicles. If ownership changes, the previous owner must update the status on the portal, or they may face fines.

Damaged Tags

If a tag is lost or damaged, users must update their vehicle status online and provide a police report to obtain a new tag, which may incur a fee. Faulty tags can be replaced for free, unless tampered with.
